The NIR's Key Features
Near infrared (NIR) light therapy is based on the fundamental premise that long-wavelength light stimulates cellular energy metabolism and energy production. Infrared energy is invisible but reaches deep into the body’s soft tissues, muscles, joints, and bones. Three major photoreceptor molecules absorb light in the NIR range: hemoglobin, myoglobin, and cytochrome c oxidase. Of these, cytochrome c oxidase is the most important mechanism of photobiomodulation (or low-level laser therapy, LLLT) and is associated with improved cellular energy (ATP) production.
